ICU nurses treat patients who require the utmost care due to critical conditions. Unlike an ER RN, this role will typically only see a few patients per day so they can provide their full attention to the details of each patient. Due to the extensive documentation per patient, ICU RNs typically see 1-3 patients per shift so they can provide thorough and detailed care.
To be an ICU RN, you must complete the same degree and credentialing requirements as a registered nurse. In addition to those requirements, candidates must have experience in patient care and have earned a Certified Critical Care Nurse certificate through AACN.
With ICU nursing being included in the Bureau of Labor Statistics data for the nursing industry, the outlook for this job continues to increase. The role of an ICU Nurse remains essential, making them a critical asset for hospitals and various health facilities. Salary ranges are based on your experience, education, skills, certifications and hiring facility location.
