 ASL Educational Interpreter Needed - Indianapolis, IN

Sunbelt is actively hiring an educational ASL interpreter for a school in the area.

This position is meant to assist with facilitating  communication between deaf or hard of hearing students and hearing teachers, staff, and peers within a classroom setting by accurately interpreting spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) 

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Interpreting classroom instruction:
    Accurately interpreting lectures, discussions, questions, and responses between teachers and students, including complex concepts and nuanced language. 
  • Adapting to student needs:
    Adjusting interpreting style based on the student's preferred sign language system, such as ASL, Signed Exact English (SEE), or Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE). 
  • Collaborating with teachers:
    Consulting with teachers to identify areas where additional support is needed, suggesting modifications to lesson plans to enhance accessibility. 
  • Providing visual support:
    Utilizing visual aids like facial expressions, body language, and gestures to convey meaning effectively. 
  • Supporting student engagement:
    Facilitating student participation in class discussions, group activities, and social interactions. 
  • Maintaining confidentiality:
    Protecting student privacy by adhering to ethical guidelines regarding sensitive information. 

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Applicants with either the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or the Certified Deaf Interpreter Certification (CDIC) will be considered
