Job Description

An opportunity exists for a qualified Orientation and Mobility Specialist to support students in a K-12 educational environment located in Fort Lauderdale, FL. This full-time position involves providing essential services to enhance the independence and mobility of students with visual impairments through structured orientation and mobility training.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Rehabilitation Counseling, or related field
  • Experience working with K-12 students, particularly those with visual impairments
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop individualized mobility plans
  • Knowledge of adaptive techniques and tools used in orientation and mobility
  • Commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments to determine students’ mobility needs and develop tailored orientation and mobility plans.
  • Provide direct instruction in safe and effective travel techniques, including the use of canes and other mobility aids.
  • Collaborate with educators, parents, and other specialists to integrate mobility training into the students’ daily routines.
  • Organize and lead group mobility lessons and workshops.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust training methods as needed to ensure continued development.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of services provided and student progress.
