Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency waves to record images of internal organs. Sonographers are healthcare professionals who have received the appropriate educational training and certification to use ultrasound equipment to produce the necessary imagery.

Some of the responsibilities of a sonographer include:

  • Preparing the exam room with applicable ultrasound equipment
  • Utilizing the equipment in such a way that produces the images requested by the physician
  • Generating reports that include the results of the scan

The requirement to become a sonographer includes an associate degree in medical technology or a related field. You may consider pursuing higher education and earning certificates from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and Cardiovascular Credentialing International Organization to advance your career and salary. However, this is not a requirement.
